Film restoration is necessary so that our cultural heritage can be preserved. Old movies and video tapes can deteriorate, so it is necessary to restore them so that the coming generations can get a chance to see these historical artifacts. Restoration not only improves the quality of the film, but it also helps us to understand the story of the past further.
Of movies Restoration What challenges do I come?
There are many challenges in the restoration of films. In which the old prints are found in poor condition, which have problems like broken sprots and mildew. Original camera negative or prints are often not available, making the restoration process difficult. It is a complex process that requires advanced techniques and expertise. Film restoration is an expensive and time -consuming process. The restoration of a film costs 15-16 lakhs. The original negative of Shyam Benegal’s ‘Manthan’ was found to be fungus, which was also difficult to remove.
Heritage Foundation started due to Jaya Bachchan
Shivendra Singh Dungarpur, owner of the film Heritage Foundation, gave accurate information about the restoration of films during a conversation with Dainik Bhaskar. He said- After the restoration of the film ‘Kalpana’, I have given my mentor P.K. The documentary ‘Cellulid Man’ was formed on Nair. It received two National Awards. While making that documentary, when I was traveling, it was found that 90 percent of India’s silent films are no longer left. Many of my favorite films were either not getting or their reels were very bad. Jaya Bachchan said in a meeting that you are so passionate, so why not start something? One of his sentences echoed in my mind and in the same year I started the film Heritage Foundation.
Amitabh Bachchan is the brand ambassador of the film Heritage Foundation
Amitabh Bachchan is the brand ambassador of our film Heritage Foundation. We also preserve his films in a very safe way. He has a deep interest in film history and film preservation and he is a great support for us.
It was very difficult to restore Amitabh Bachchan’s film ‘Don’
It was very challenging to show Amitabh Bachchan’s film ‘Don’. Because I got its print in a very poor condition. I was afraid that I would be able to show the film properly and not, but when it was released to commemorate the completion of 45 years of ‘Don’. Then there was a different experience for the people to watch the film.
The print of 60 films was kept in his house by Amitabh Bachchan.
Amitabh Bachchan had protected the print of about 60 films in his home AC room for many years. He kept these films in such a way, such as a treasure. He handed over the print of all films to the film Heritage Foundation five years ago.
No print of Dilip Kumar’s film Ganga Jamuna
There are many films that do not have negative prints. Those who are left are so bad that they cannot see it on the screen. In such a situation, Dilip Kumar’s film ‘Ganga Jamuna’ was also found. Shivendra Singh Dungarpur says- It was a matter of regret that I could not show Dilip Kumar’s film ‘Ganga Jamuna’ on screen. Because his material was lost. What was left was in a very poor condition.
Negatives of Satyajit Ray’s films were burnt
Frames disappeared due to the burning of negatives of films like Satyajit Ray’s ‘Pahar Panchali’ and ‘Apoor Sansar’. In such a situation, every frame had to be recreated properly, so that when people look at it, they feel that nothing is missing. However, it was very difficult to recruit it. Apart from this, apart from Bimal Rai’s ‘Do Bigha Zameen’, some more films have been restored.

The objective is to bring old films to this new generation

Today’s film makers are resting films
Makers like Vikramaditya Motwani, Farhan Akhtar and Vishal Bhardwaj are actively involved in the preservation of their films. Shivendra Singh Dungarpur says- We call them in our events and share their experiences. This type of discussion inspires that film makers should restore their films.

Let us know that the National Film Archive of India (NFAI) is constantly engaged in preserving the print of old films. 70-80 Marathi films of the 1959–60s are also preserved with them. Recently, NFAI has preserved the print of Dev Anand’s ‘Tere Ghar Ke Saah’ and Raj Kapoor’s ‘upbringing’. In 2018, the negative of 21 films of RK Studios was given to NFAI in which films like fire, rain, lag, boot polish, Sri 420, Sangam, Sangam, Mera Naam Joker, Tomorrow today and tomorrow, Bobby, Dharam Karam, Satyam Shivam Sundaram, Prem Rogam, Biwi O Biwi, Ram Teri Ganga Maili and Aa Ab Launte were included. Dev Anand’s film was saved from junk
Nobody has the print of 1962, Dev Anand and Waheeda Rehman’s famous film ‘Baat Ek Raat Ki’ today. The film Heritage Foundation came to know that its duplicate negative is near a scrap. Raj Kapoor’s film ‘Awara’ now in new quality
On the occasion of Raj Kapoor’s 100th birth anniversary, when the film ‘Awara’ was shown in the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), the color was faded, there was no power in the voice and the English subtitle was not of kind. When Raj Kapoor’s nephew Kunal Kapoor came to know about this, he along with Prasad Studios got the quality of the film’s print.
Let us know that the government started a big scheme in 2021, in which a budget of Rs 597 crore was kept to clean and fix about 2200 old films. Raj Kapoor’s film ‘Awara’ was also part of this scheme, but the work done by the National Film Archive of India (NFAI) was not correct according to the quality. Therefore, Kunal Kapoor himself considered it necessary to handle this work.
Kishore Kumar’s old films were restored

Apart from the film ‘Love in Bombay’, many old films of Kishore Kumar are shown by restoring his death anvercesty or special oxes. Which includes classical films like ‘Half Ticket’, ‘Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi’, ‘Padosan’ and ‘Jhumru’. These films are shown in Film Festival and Retrospectives after digital restoration.
