Former Miss India World Pooja Chopra’s web series ‘Khaki the Bengal Chapter’ has been streamful on OTT platform Netflix recently. Recently, Pooja Chopra had a special conversation with Dainik Bhaskar about this series and personal life including career. During this, he made a shocking disclosure about his personal life. Pooja told that as soon as she was born, the father had asked her mother to kill her, but her mother did not listen and today she is illuminating her mother’s name. First of all, tell me what is your character in the series and how are you associated with this show?
My character is very modern independent and intelligent home girl. The rest will say how I have been associated with this show, that I have done two projects with Neeraj Pandey ji before. My first was ‘Aaus’ which was a short film directed by Neeraj sir. Then ‘Iyari’ came with Manoj Vajpayee. This is the third project. When I got a call for this, I was in Thailand and celebrating my birthday.
The casting director said that this is Neeraj sir’s project. ‘Khaki 2’ is. So I became very excited because I saw its first part. Then I asked how to send the audition, he said that no needs to do not have worked with them before. You are a perfect cast for us. Then it became like a second best birthday for me, because the first was the best birthday when I come to Miss India in April and in May.
Did you get some briefs and what reference did you play to play the character?
Narration was enough for me. No reference was given. The bus was spoken for preparation. Its directors Debatma Mandal and Tushar Kanti Ray said that ‘We do not want you to do any homework. We have seen your work. We know that you know acting. You have potential in you, the rest leave you to us. If we have to mold you on the set, we do the same way, then you just come clean slate.
Is there any priority set for the selection of characters?
I do not know the other actors, but the one I have always planned for me and not to do such types of rolls or not to do it. By the way, my life and rolls have never been done according to the plan. I have stopped planning. I have just avoided ‘Hate Story’ type films. My clear is not to make me any such space film. The rest, for any kind of rolls and scripts, I am always open. The rest should first understand the script and like it. This is priority. Only for the name is not being kept standing in any project. I definitely take care of this.
Self approach to get work or offers come on their own?
I am an outsider. Here I do not have any uncle, maternal uncle, uncle-aunt who will introduce me to parties or in breakfast and unfortunately I neither socialize myself. Nobody will ever see me at someone’s party, someone’s camp or in a Filmfare Award. This is not my circle, so the directors with whom I want to work. Whether Neeraj Pandey has become, whether it has been a shouted government, I message them from now on whether I saw this film or I am a very big fun of you. I have done this work and I want to work with you. Usually 100 percent of whom I have approached, positive response has come from.
What do you have in terms of web series or films?
There are many expectations, a lot of dreams. The rest of the offers keep coming, but that level work should also be done. Now as many people say that Pooja ‘Khaki 2’ is your comeback, so I say where I was there. Yes, I reduce the project, because I get a few good offers. The movies, which I do not like the script, personally, I could not say yes to do them because I know that I will not be able to give justice to that character, because my heart is not in it. Many people bail in quality and some in quantity. I think more in quality.
What kind of struggle was there after winning ‘Miss India’?
I had to audition even after winning ‘Miss India’ and named a very good name in ‘Miss World’. I am telling you after 2012. Earlier, audition was necessary, today it has become more important, because today’s audience is very intelligent. If you do not give good performance, whether you are someone’s son or daughter or Miss Universe. The audience does not mind. If you are playing a good character on the screen, then people will accept you, otherwise you will trash you.
There have been so many competitions now, connected to the beauty pageant. Every film maker is also looking for a new face. In such a situation, how do they maintain their own surveillance?
I do not know about the rest of the girls, but as far as I am concerned, my problem is not survival. My problem is a good script. Earlier, the films I did, such as ‘Jahan Char Yaar’, ‘Bablu Bachelor’ or ‘Commando’ I chose them only because of a good story. Even today, if I want, if I want, I can sign five films and eat for the next 2 years, but my problem is quality, I just want a good script. The rest of the commercial is also talking about survival, so till date I have maintained myself so much that there is no problem.
If you are a pace about acting, then why do you not act in Bhojpuri or Tollywood besides Hindi?
No, I was never in my option and neither. I got the Tamil film ‘Ponnar Shankar’ from South in 2011. She was very grand scale. It was a film of about 60 crores. It was the then Chief Minister of M Karunanidhi. It was directed by Tyagarajan Shivanandam. I played the role of a princess in it. But to be honest, I did not enjoy acting there, because I did not understand the language.
I do not want to do only movies. I also have to enjoy. I will not be able to perform in that language until my heart accepts any language. If you are not able to perform, then half will be like working. I will not even sleep at night.
You got the ‘Beauty with the Purpose’ title in Miss India. Do you still work on that even today?
I think that purpose is such that cannot be separated from him. I still help for that cose (little bud). Under the cose, the girls who leave their parents are helped. We do the work of teaching and writing of girls in the red light area, belonging to poor families.
Through a campaign, for 18 years or then those girls who need furder education. He has to support him. I am also associated with this because my own father refused to accept me at one time, because they wanted a boy. He told my mother directly to leave or kill it in the orphanage, because a girl is with us, we can only do two children, we want a boy next. Then my mother refused to do so and separated from my father and raised me.
Today, he made both our sisters capable that we are at this point in a city like Mumbai. I also illuminated my mother’s name. When I became Miss India, I had become a very big story and my mother was being taken a lot of interviews. Live interviews were also under the house, a lot of OB vans were standing. At that time, the mother looked like a hero, because the mother had taken a very strong step.
What do you have to say on the career so far and the setting of success in this field?
Whether it is good for anyone or not my career graph, but I know what I have done, where I am sitting on my own. At one time we did not have any bread for two times. Today I am sitting with my own house in Mumbai after fulfilling my mother’s dream. Today my mother gets off the car. Today we take them abroad, to celebrate the holiday. My mother would not have even thought 40 years ago that today my daughters will become so big that they will make me feel proud. I will say this much for my career, what I have done on my own.
