Kerala General Education Minister V Shivkutty strongly criticized NCERT’s decision to name Hindi for English Medium books.
The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has changed the English names of many books to Hindi names amid language disputes on the New Education Policy (NEP-2020) across the country.
The new debate has erupted after this move of NCERT. Language experts say that this step is an attempt to promote Hindi in non-Hindi speaking areas. States like Tamil Nadu have already opposed this.
Kerala General Education Minister V Shivkutty strongly criticized NCERT’s decision to name Hindi for English Medium books. He said- This is serious irrationality and is a move to weaken India’s linguistic diversity.
The minister said – ‘Kerala, like other non -Hindi speaking states, is committed to protecting linguistic diversity and prioritizing regional cultural freedom. This decision of NCERT is against federal principles and constitutional values. The title in textbooks is not just names, they shape children’s perception and imagination. ‘
Shivkutty has demanded NCERT to review the decision and withdraw it. He also called upon all states to unite against it. He said- There should be not a means of imposing education but a means of empowerment and consensus.
The English book of class 6 has been named ‘Eastern’ from ‘Honeysuckle’ to ‘Eastern’.
NCERT named English book Marigold
Recently, NCERT released new names of books for various classes. English books of class 1 and class 2 are changed to Marigold to ‘Mridang’ and class 3 book is named ‘Santoor’.
The English book of class 6 has been named ‘Eastern’ from ‘Honeysuckle’ to ‘Eastern’. The same pattern has been adopted for Maths books. Class 6 mathematics book, which was earlier in English, Mathematics and Hindi in Hindi, now it will come under the name Mathematics in both languages.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin had earlier criticized the Central Government for “imposing Hindi”, claiming that the central government refused to give finance to the state schools for refusing to implement three language formulas in NEP.
The Union Education Minister appealed not to politicize education
On the TRAI language dispute, Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan wrote a letter to Tamil Nadu CM MK Stalin. He criticized the opposition to the National Education Policy (NEP) in the state.
He wrote, ‘There is no question of imposing any language. But excessive dependence on foreign languages limits itself. The new National Education Policy (NEP) is trying to fix it. NEP maintains linguistic freedom and ensures that students continue to learn the language of their choice.
Dharmendra Pradhan in his letter, referring to PM Modi’s ‘Tamil language eternal’ in Chennai in May 2022, wrote- Modi government is fully committed to promoting and popularizing Tamil culture and language globally. I appeal not to politicize education.
Know why this dispute started
Under NEP 2020, students must learn three languages, but no language has been made mandatory. States and schools have the freedom to decide which three languages they want to teach. There is no provision for the imperative of any language. It has been recommended to study in primary classes (class 1 to 5) in mother tongue or local language.
At the same time, it is mandatory to study three languages in middle classes (class 6 to 10). The non-Hindi speaking state will have English or a modern Indian language. In the secondary section i.e. 11th and 12th, school will also be able to give foreign languages as an alternative. Many leaders disagreed from NEP 2020.
From the first day of the budget session of Parliament, DMK MPs opposed the new education policy. While protesting, the MPs came close to Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and raised fierce slogans.
