Dr. Vivek Jain (Senior Director and Unit Head, Paediatrics, Fortis Hospital, Shalimar Bagh) explains that this smile is deeply connected with a child’s growth, brain maturity and emotional health. Newborn smiles are called “reflex smiles.” Smiles seen in the first weeks of life are reflexive, a natural function of the brain, without any external response. This smile occurs during REM (rapid eye movement) sleep. During this time, the baby’s brain is developing rapidly and neural connections are forming. This is a sign that the baby’s nervous system is functioning at a healthy pace.
