Andre Russell surprised everyone on Sunday with this sudden decision. Let us tell you that he has been an important part of the identity of Kolkata Knight Riders for a long time and his unmatched power-hitting has given many memorable moments to the IPL. According to available information, KKR has given the new role of ‘Power Coach’ to Russell for the 2026 season, due to which he will remain a part of the team even outside the field.
It is noteworthy that KKR had released Russell before the IPL 2026 auction, after which there were speculations that he could join some other franchise, especially Chennai Super Kings. However, Russell himself made it clear that he wanted to leave the game on his own terms and the idea of seeing himself in another team’s jersey has never felt comfortable to him.
Russell said in the official video shared by KKR that he always wanted people to ask after his retirement, “Why? You could have played more,” not “You should have retired years ago.” According to him, these feelings have brought him to the decision at the right time.
Recalling his 12-season IPL journey, Russell said that KKR considered him not just a player but a member of the family. According to available information, in the last few months he had several rounds of talks with KKR management, especially CEO Venky Mysore and team co-owner Shahrukh Khan, after which the team has offered him a new role.
He said that he found it strange to see himself being photoshopped into different teams’ jerseys on social media and it made him realize that his heart is still with the ‘Purple and Gold’. This emotional connection has led him towards retirement and coaching.
Russell scored 2,651 runs and 124 wickets in the IPL as a player, with his strike rate of 174.97 placing him at the top of the list of the league’s most explosive all-rounders. He believes that the role of ‘Power Coach’ is perfect considering his experience and playing style, as he will be able to help the young players in improving their batting power, bowling energy and enthusiasm on the field.
At the end of the video he promised KKR fans that this is just the beginning of a new chapter. “Kolkata, I will be back… Korbo, Lorbo, Jeetbo,” he sent the message in his familiar style.
