Aadhaar is no longer proof of date of birth, Uttar Pradesh government gave strict instructions to all departments

The Uttar Pradesh government on Friday directed all departments to stop accepting Aadhaar cards as proof of birth or date of birth. The government says that it does not work as a birth certificate. Issuing the order, Special Secretary, Planning Department, Amit Singh Bansal stressed that Aadhaar cards are not birth certificates and should not be used as such. This change affects the way people prove their age or date of birth in the state. The purpose of this step is to clarify the purpose of the document and avoid confusion.

The directive comes after a letter from the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) clarified that Aadhaar is not an accepted document for verifying date of birth. The letter sent by Bansal to the Honorable Additional Chief Secretary/Chief Secretary/Secretary of the Government of Uttar Pradesh states, “Please have the courtesy to refer to the letter number 16013/4/2020-RO-LKO/5416 dated 31.10.2025 of the Deputy Director, Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI 00003050), Regional Office, Lucknow, through which it has been informed that the Aadhar Card There is no accepted proof of date of birth.”

The letter further stated that various state departments do not accept Aadhaar as proof of date of birth and stressed the need to ensure uniform compliance across all government departments. The order has also directed officials to issue necessary instructions so that Aadhaar is not accepted as proof of date of birth in any state government department.

Meanwhile, in a recent development, the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has deactivated over two crore Aadhaar numbers belonging to deceased persons, in one of the biggest cleanup operations of the national identity database. According to the press release of the Ministry of Electronics and IT, the move is aimed at keeping Aadhaar records accurate and preventing misuse of the identity. UIDAI said it has received information about the deceased persons from the Registrar General of India, state governments, union territories, public distribution system and National Social Assistance Programme.
