Assam Congress president and MP Gaurav Gogoi on Thursday launched a scathing attack on Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, alleging that the state government is misusing the SIR process to woo voters ahead of the upcoming elections. Speaking to ANI, Gogoi claimed that the Chief Minister is trying to bring BJP workers from other states in trains to Assam and get their names registered in the voter list. He said such efforts were aimed at reducing the number of Assamese voters.

The Congress leader urged the Election Commission to take the issue seriously and ensure transparency in the electoral process. He said that in the upcoming elections, the Election Commission should be serious.” He further said that Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar should explain “why they do not have a machine-readable voter list. Gogoi alleged that in the absence of such a system, there remains scope for manipulation and public confidence in the electoral process is reduced. He called on the Election Commission to clarify its position and ensure corrective measures before the elections.
Assam Congress has consistently raised questions on the SIR process and accused the state government of using it to change the demographic and political equations.On Sunday, Gogoi said the people of Assam were still mourning the demise of Zubeen Garg and described the late singer as a true leader of the Assamese society. His comments came at a time when fans and political leaders gathered in Guwahati on Sunday to pay floral tributes to the iconic singer on the completion of one month of his demise. A large number of fans and eminent personalities paid emotional tribute to the late singer.
