In Punjab, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has expelled its current Mayor Baljit Singh Channi from the party for his involvement in anti-party and wrongful activities.
He has also been asked to resign from the post of mayor. According to the information, allegations of taking money in exchange for protecting a woman from a criminal case came to light, due to which the party took this action.
Baljit Singh Channi was elected as the Mayor of Moga Municipal Corporation on August 21, 2023 without any opposition. He became the first mayor of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in Punjab. Earlier, on July 5, 2023, a no-confidence motion was passed against the then Congress mayor Nitika Bhalla, after which Channi was elected with the support of the councillors.
Channi was elected in the presence of 42 out of 50 councilors at the Moga Municipal Corporation House meeting. It included the support of 32 AAP councilors and 10 councilors from other parties.
