President of America Donald Trump says his plan to end the war in Ukraine has been “fine-tuned” and he is sending envoy Steve Witkoff to meet with Vladimir Putin and Army Secretary Dan Driscoll to meet with Ukrainian officials. Yet despite the White House’s hopes, diplomatic efforts have continued to make little progress on key obstacles.
Trump said that his Jared Kushner may attend the Witkoff-Putin meeting. “Steve Witkoff is probably going with Jared. I don’t know for sure when Jared is going, but he’s involved in the process, a smart guy, and he’s going to meet with President Putin, I think next week, in Moscow,” Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One. Trump also walked back his Thursday deadline for Ukraine to agree to a US-backed peace plan, saying: “My deadline is when this is over.”
Trump indicated that he might also meet with Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, subject to sufficient progress in talks. He said that he is Vice President J.D. Vance will be briefed on progress along with Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Secretary of War Pete Hegseth and White House Chief of Staff Suzy Wiles, the official residence and office of the US President.

Trump’s comments came after Army Secretary Driscoll spoke with Russian officials in Abu Dhabi late Monday night and Tuesday. “Talks are moving in a positive direction and we remain optimistic,” said Lt. Col. Jeff Tolbert, a spokesman for the Army secretary. As talks continued, Russia launched missile attacks on Kiev overnight, killing at least seven people, while a Ukrainian strike killed three in southern Russia. The authorities gave this information.

Trump’s peace plan, revealed last week, is said to be pro-Russian, after which Zelensky immediately met with American negotiators. European countries have also expressed their concerns on this. French President Emmanuel Macron said peace efforts are at a critical juncture and are gaining momentum. British Prime Minister Keir Stormer also described the talks as positive. However, Ukraine’s representative, Oleksandr Bevz, said it was too early to say whether any agreement had been reached.
