Former Congress MP Rashid Alvi on Tuesday raised questions over Prime Minister Narendra Modi hoisting the saffron flag on the Ram Janmabhoomi temple in Ayodhya and asked whether he would do the same on a mosque, gurudwara or church. Speaking to ANI, Alvi accused Prime Minister Modi of using the Ram Temple issue for political gains ahead of the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections in 2027 and asked him to learn about secularism from India’s first Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru.

The Congress leader said that according to the Constitution there is no religion in this country, then why does the Prime Minister want to hoist this flag? Will he hoist the flag on the mosque, gurudwara or church? He wants to hoist the flag on Ram temple for political gains, so that he can benefit in Uttar Pradesh elections by inciting religious sentiments in the country… He should learn secularism from Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. This comes after Prime Minister Modi and Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat today formally hoisted the saffron flag on the 191-foot-high spire of the Ram Janmabhoomi temple in Ayodhya, marking the completion of the temple construction.
Addressing the people present at the flag hoisting ceremony, the Prime Minister said that India and the world are united with Ram. He described the installation of the Dharma flag over the Ram temple as a moment that heals the “wounds of centuries” and said it symbolizes the fulfillment of a civilizational resolve that has been kept alive for 500 years. Prime Minister Modi said, “Today the whole of India and the world is filled with Ram. There is extraordinary satisfaction in the heart of every devotee of Ram. There is immense gratitude. There is immense supernatural joy. The wounds of centuries are healing. The pain of centuries is being calmed today. The resolve of centuries is being fulfilled today. Today is the completion of that Yagya whose fire remained burning for 500 years.”
