Traveling with a pet in India can be quite confusing. This confusion is compounded when traveling by train. Many pet owners are always confused about whether dogs are allowed to be transported on Indian Railways or not. Today we have brought the right information to clear your confusion…
Traveling with dogs in First AC
Indian Railways allows dogs to travel with their owners in First AC cabins or First Class coaches, but the condition is that the owner has booked the entire coach. Indian Railways has established this rule to avoid inconvenience to other passengers. After booking the entire cabin, you can request DRM and get approval easily.
No permission in other coaches
As per railway rules, dogs are strictly prohibited from entering sleeper class, AC sleeper, AC chair car, and other second class coaches. These coaches carry many other passengers, and pets can cause inconvenience to other passengers. For this reason, railways do not allow open carriage of pets in shared coaches.
Use of parcel vans
If you do not wish to book a full compartment, you can transport your dog in a dedicated dog compartment in the brake/parcel van. This is a place specially designed for pets. Pet owners have to book this service station through parcel office.
What is the booking process?
Indian Railways currently does not offer online booking for pets. To complete this process, owners have to visit the parcel booking office at the station. Due to the lengthy process, you need to reach the station at least 1 to 2 hours before departure.
