Indian Test captain Shubman Gill is unlikely to play in the second Test match against South Africa. Apart from this, his playing in the three-match ODI series against the same team is also doubtful. The Indian team for this match is expected to be announced on November 23, but if Gill is out, the host team may have to find a new captain. Shreyas Iyer, who was the vice-captain of the team during the Australia tour, is also injured and may not be able to play in the ODI series, due to which the selectors are confused about the leadership group for the series.

After the recent removal of Rohit Sharma from the captaincy, there is little possibility of him becoming the captain again. Same is the case with Virat Kohli, who last captained India in any format in 2022. In this case, KL Rahul is the only senior player left in the team who has led India in 12 ODIs so far, winning eight and losing four. However, he last captained India in this format in 2023 and has been playing as a wicketkeeper-batsman for the last few years.

Hardik Pandya could have been an option, but his chances of playing in the ODI series are also slim. Rishabh Pant was not a part of the ODI series in Australia due to injury, but he can make a comeback in the team and take charge of the Indian team. This left-handed batsman has never captained the Indian team in the 50-over format, but he has been leading the team in Test matches and has previously captained India in T20 Internationals as well. Therefore, if both Gill and Iyer are officially out, Rahul and Pant are the two most likely options to captain India in the ODI series.
