Zero tolerance towards violence, Bihar elections will be peaceful: CEC Gyanesh Kumar’s strong message on Mokama massacre

Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar on Sunday reiterated the Election Commission of India’s policy of zero tolerance towards violence. He assured the voters of Bihar that all the police officers, election officers and Zilla Parishad officials are ready to conduct free and fair elections, which will set an example for the whole world. Gyanesh Kumar said that I appeal to everyone to participate in the election process and exercise their franchise. On the subject of violence, the Election Commission wishes to clarify that the Election Commission adopts a policy of zero tolerance towards violence. Any incident of violence will not be tolerated.

The Election Commission is prepared to ensure that voters can vote peacefully. Our 243 returning officers, the same number of observers, collectors of every district, district officers, SPs, SSPs, police observers, all are ready,” Chief Election Commissioner Kumar told reporters in Kanpur. The Chief Election Commissioner’s comments come amid the recent murder of politician Dularchand Yadav in Mokama Assembly constituency on October 30, when he was present at the rally of Jan Suraj candidate Piyush Priyadarshini from that area. Following the murder, people from Mokama Party (United) candidate Anant Kumar Singh has been arrested.

The Chief Election Commissioner is in Kanpur to visit his alma mater, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur, where the institute recently honored him with the Distinguished Alumni Award (DAA), the highest award given to its alumni for their exceptional merit. Today I have come to IIT Kanpur as an alumnus, because they decided to honor me. He said, “I have spent the most energetic four years of my life in the city of Kanpur and I am very fond of it. It is my good fortune that I got the opportunity to come here and go to IIT Kanpur.”

Amidst repeated allegations of favoring the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), he also stressed on the impartiality of the Election Commission as it is an integral part of the Election Commission. He said, “This is the time when elections are being held in Bihar. In Bihar elections, every political party is seeking votes from voters in its own way. I want to say once again that for the Election Commission, no one is in the ruling party nor in the opposition, everyone is neutral. The first phase of elections will be held on November 6, the second phase of elections will be held on November 11 and the counting of votes will take place on November 14.
