US President Donald Trump has introduced a new bill in the US Parliament Congress to eliminate Optional Practical Training (OPT). This has increased the concern of students from all over the world including 3 lakh Indian students studying in America.
Opt is a program that allows students studying on F-1 visa to work temporarily in the field related to their studies. This provides permission to live and find jobs for 3 years in the US after graduating international students of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (Stem).
If this bill passes, students will not be allowed to work on F-1 visa. Apart from this, they will not be able to change the F-1 visa in the work visa. It will be mandatory for such students to take a H-1B work visa to work in the US. This situation is worrying for students who are applying for H-1B work visa. According to a report, there were more than 3 lakh Indian students in the US in 2023-24 academic year, of which about 33% were eligible for OPT.
