The glow of Diwali fades due to heavy rain in Tamil Nadu, many districts affected, ‘Orange Alert’ for next 4 days

There were torrential rains in Tamil Nadu on Monday, which dampened the Diwali enthusiasm a bit. The biggest impact was on Tuticorin city, where more than 8 cm of rain fell overnight. Due to this, many low-lying areas were submerged and water entered inside houses in some parts of the city.

Apart from Tuticorin, Nilgiris, Erode, Theni, Virudhunagar and Tirunelveli also received heavy rainfall as the north-east monsoon has now gained momentum in the southern state.

According to the weather department, about 9 to 10 cm of rain was recorded in Coonoor, Burliyar and Periyakulam. At the same time, 8-8 cm rainfall was recorded at Kodiveri in Erode, Sarvalar in Tirunelveli and Tuticorin railway station.

Officials said that due to continuous rains, water storage in many big reservoirs (dams) of the state has almost reached its full capacity.

state preparation

Chief Minister MK Stalin had on Sunday itself reviewed the preparations with the collectors of the districts prone to heavy rains. The Chief Minister said that the entire system of the state government is ready to deal with any situation. State disaster response forces and local bodies are on high alert.

In Chennai, where waterlogging is a frequent problem, the forecast of continuous heavy rains has raised new concerns. Although the DMK government has expanded the rain water drainage network in the city, officials believe some areas are still a work in progress. In the coming days, this system will be tested in extreme monsoon conditions.
