Some analysts say Pakistan is trying to establish a new normal with the Taliban by making it clear that future attacks on its soil could invite retaliation inside Afghanistan. This stance mirrors the stance taken by India’s Narendra Modi government against Pakistan in April, which was opposed by Islamabad at the time. India launched strikes into Pakistani territory in May, resulting in a four-day conflict in which both sides used missiles, drones and artillery on each other. Analysts say this changing scenario between Pakistan and Afghanistan shows that although the fighting may have subsided over the weekend, tensions are likely to increase in the coming weeks and any permanent solution still remains distant.

Reason behind border clashes

Of the various armed groups reportedly operating from Afghanistan, Pakistani officials consider Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) the biggest threat. The TTP emerged in 2007 during the so-called United States-led war on terrorism and has been waging an armed campaign against Islamabad for years. It calls for the implementation of strict Islamic law, the release of imprisoned members, and the revocation of the merger of Pakistan’s former tribal areas into the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. The TTP is independent from the Afghan Taliban, but the two groups are ideologically similar.
