Earlier on October 13, Palestinian militant group Hamas released the last 20 Israeli hostages, possibly signaling the end of the conflict in Gaza, which began on October 7, 2023 after a siege of southern Israel. The attack that day killed 1,219 people, mainly civilians, and Hamas militants captured 251 hostages who were taken to Gaza.
