Durgapur Gang Rape Case. Fourth accused in custody of MBBS student, all local residents

The West Bengal Police has detained one more person, accelerating the investigation into the gang rape of a second year MBBS student of a private medical college in Durgapur. With this, the total number of people arrested/detained in this case has reached four.

Identification of accused and legal action

The police had already arrested three people in this case, and now the fourth person has been detained. The arrested accused and detained persons are all said to be local residents.

Names of the accused, Apu Bauri (21), Firdous Seikh (23), Seikh Riazuddin (31) and Sheikh Sofikul.

Officials said that all these accused and the detained person will be presented in the court today (Sunday). They have been booked under sections 376D (gang rape) and 34 (criminal act committed by several persons with common intention) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

The family’s suspicions about the incident

This 23-year-old student, resident of Jaleshwar, Odisha, studies at IQ City Medical College located in Shivpur area of ​​Durgapur.

According to officials, the incident occurred on Friday night, when the student had gone outside the college campus with a male friend. It is alleged that some people came near the college gate and dragged the student to a secluded area about 1 kilometer away from the college campus, where they gang-raped her and then fled.

The victim’s family has made serious allegations in their police complaint saying that the student’s male friend is also involved in this crime. The family says that the friend misled him and took him to an isolated place under false pretenses. The complaint also states that the accused had also snatched the woman’s mobile phone and ₹5,000.

improvement in the condition of the victim

The victim is undergoing treatment in a hospital in Durgapur. Officials have said that his condition is improving. West Bengal Women and Child Development Minister and Trinamool Congress leader Shashi Panja, reacting to the incident, said that all possible assistance will be provided to the victim and she will be given psychological counselling.
