Six people were killed and many others were injured in separate incidents of firing in the US state of Mississippi. The officers provided this information. Four people were killed in a shooting after an alumni football game at a high school in Leland, in the west Delta region of Mississippi, a state senator said Saturday.
Senator Derrick Simmons said that about 20 people were injured in the shooting after people gathered in the city of Leland after the match. Simmons told The Associated Press (AP) that four of the 20 injured were in critical condition and had been taken from a hospital in nearby Greenville to a larger medical center in the state capital, Jackson.
Simmons said he was briefed on the developments by the Washington County Sheriff’s Office and other Delta law enforcement officials. “People were gathering in downtown Leland and having a good time,” Simmons said.
They were told that the situation after the shooting was “very chaotic” and that police, sheriff’s deputies and ambulances arrived at the scene after the incident. “This is a senseless shooting incident,” he said. It is felt that the prevalence of guns has increased.
Simmons said no arrests have been announced yet and said Saturday morning he had not received any information about possible suspects. “Officials are working at the ground level and I am confident that they will get to the bottom of this,” he said.
At the same time, two people died in a separate incident of shooting in Heidelberg, East Mississippi. Mississippi City police are investigating a shooting that occurred during a function.
Heidelberg Police Chief Cornell White said two people were murdered on the school premises on Friday night. He declined to say whether the victims were students or provide any other information about the crimes.
“We cannot provide any further details on this case at this time,” White said Saturday morning. The Jasper County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement that an 18-year-old man is being sought for questioning in the Heidelberg shooting. The sheriff said if anyone has any information they can contact the police chief or sheriff’s office.
