IPS officer Y. Puran Kumar’s death has sparked widespread outrage and all political parties have demanded an impartial investigation. Haryana Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment Krishna Kumar Bedi expressed grief over the incident and called it a tragic loss. Bedi said, “It is sad. He died by suicide… The whole matter is very complex… Chandigarh Police is taking action against those who need it. Haryana has no role in this… He was from my community… The loss of such a successful officer is unfortunate.”
Meanwhile, Punjab Finance Minister and senior Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Harpal Singh Cheema demanded an independent judicial inquiry into the alleged suicide, claiming that atrocities on Dalits have reached dangerous levels under the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led government. Earlier, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) chief Arvind Kejriwal expressed deep grief over the alleged suicide of late Haryana officer Y Puran Kumar and said that the officer committed suicide due to caste-based harassment. He also demanded strict punishment for the culprits. In a post shared on Twitter, Kejriwal said, “Puran Kumar ji, a Dalit IPS officer from Haryana, faced so much harassment because of his caste that he took his life.”
