Trump angry at not getting Nobel Prize? Why were 9 Indian companies suddenly banned?

The enmity between Iran and America is not hidden from anyone. Now America has taken a big decision to put economic pressure on Iran. The US has imposed sanctions on nine India-based companies and eight Indian nationals in the latest sanctions action related to Iran. The US alleges that they are engaged in trading in Iranian oil, petroleum products and petrochemicals. The US State Department imposed sanctions on approximately 40 individuals, entities and vessels for their involvement in trading in Iranian petroleum and petrochemical products. Additionally, the US Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) has sanctioned 60 individuals, entities and vessels for their role in facilitating the shipment of oil and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) from Iran to foreign end users. Sanctions have also been imposed on various entities of some other countries including China and the United Arab Emirates.

Eight Indian chemical and petrochemical trading companies are on the US State Department’s sanctions list. These include Mumbai-based CJ Shah & Company, Chemovic, Modi Chem, Parikem Resources, Indisol Marketing, Haresh Petrochem and Shiv TexChem, and Delhi-based BK Sales Corporation. According to the State Department, these companies have collectively imported hundreds of millions of dollars worth of Iranian-origin petrochemicals over the past few years, which have been subject to US sanctions. The State Department’s list also includes five Indian nationals – Chemovic director Piyush Maganlal Javia, Indisol marketing director Niti Unmesh Bhatt, and Haresh Petrochem directors Kamala Cassatt, Kunal Cassatt and Poonam Cassatt.

Three Indian nationals, Varun Pulla, Iyappan Raja and Sonia Shrestha, have been designated by OFAC for their alleged links to vessels transporting Iranian LPG. Mumbai-based shipping company Vega Star Ship Management, which OFAC says owns the Sonia Shrestha, has also been designated by OFAC because a ship owned by the company was transporting Comoros-flagged Napta Iranian LPG to Pakistan.
