Russia on Friday endorsed US President Donald Trump’s candidacy for the Nobel Peace Prize, which is to be announced today by the Norwegian Nobel Committee. Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov reportedly made the statement hours before the award was announced. Moscow has repeatedly said it appreciates Trump’s efforts to stop the war in Ukraine. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said in a commentary published Thursday that if Trump succeeds in brokering a ceasefire, Kiev will nominate him for the Nobel Peace Prize. Trump has spent the past few months aggressively pursuing the award, including publicly announcing he was eligible and speaking to Norwegian officials.

Pressure on Norway’s Nobel Committee increased after Trump helped secure a ceasefire and possible peace deal between Israel and Hamas. In a post on X, Trump’s son Eric told his followers to retweet if you think Donald Trump deserves the Nobel Peace Prize. Meanwhile, the official White House account also posted a photo of Trump on X and called him the “Peace President”.

Hours before the announcement on Friday, Trump touted his achievements in striking a deal in Gaza and ending eight wars, while also taking aim at former US President Barack Obama for giving him the award for doing nothing. He said that he received this award for doing nothing. Obama got an award – they didn’t even know if he was elected, and they gave it to Obama for doing nothing but ruining our country.
