Myanmar Military Strike | Junta’s havoc in Myanmar! 40 killed in bombing on anti-military rule protest, horrifying video goes viral

A Myanmar military attack on a festive event and protests killed 40 people, including children, an attendee and a local committee member told AFP on Tuesday. Myanmar has been battling civil war since the military seized power in a 2021 coup, prompting pro-democracy rebels to take up arms and ally with ethnic armed groups against the junta. Hundreds of people had gathered in central Myanmar’s Chaung U township for the Thadingyut full moon festival on Monday evening when the military fired bombs into the crowd, according to a member of the committee organizing the event. Around 100 people had reportedly gathered to protest. In videos that surfaced online, several bodies can be heard crying after seeing the bodies of their family members. Houses were also reportedly damaged in the military attack. Children and women are also among the dead.

Reports said Monday night’s attack was carried out by a motorized paraglider, and targeted a village in the country’s central Sagaing region where a Buddhist festival was being celebrated, including a rally calling for the release of political prisoners held by Myanmar’s military government. Myanmar is in a civil war that began after the military seized power in February 2021. Much of the country, including the village of Bon Tu where the attack took place, remains under the control of resistance forces.

About 80 others injured in the attack

About 80 others were also injured in the attack. “A motorized paraglider flew right over the crowd,” a woman told news agency AFP. Some people reportedly managed to escape before the attack because a local committee had alerted them. Meanwhile, another motorized paraglider flew overhead and people rushed to the spot to help the injured. “When I was telling people ‘Please don’t run’, the paramotor dropped two bombs,” a resident of Chaung Yu told the news agency.

‘Brutal campaign’

Human rights watchdog Amnesty International condemned the brutal attack on civilians. In a statement, Amnesty said the attack should serve as “a dire warning that civilians in Myanmar need urgent protection.” It further said that the attack shows that the army has intensified its brutal campaign against the people protesting against it. Myanmar has been in a civil war since the military seized power following a coup in 2021. This led to civil unrest in the Asian country.

The junta has described the elections starting on December 28 as a path to reconciliation. But a UN expert has dismissed the vote as a “fraud” to conceal continued military rule, and rebels have vowed to block it. The army is now encircling rebel positions, aiming to expand territorial control ahead of elections.
