The US Senate confirmed the name of Sergio Gore as the next US Ambassador to India. The name of Gore (38) was approved by the Senate on Tuesday. In the vote, 51 senators voted in favor of Gore and 47 against him. This confirmation came despite the current US government ‘shutdown’. Meanwhile, apart from Gore, the names of 107 nominees were confirmed. Other nominees include California’s Paul Kapoor as Assistant Secretary of State for South Asian Affairs and Florida’s Anjani Sinha as Ambassador to the Republic of Singapore.

Trump in August nominated Gore, the director of presidential personnel, as the next US ambassador to India and special envoy for South and Central Asian affairs. Trump described Gore as a “great friend” and said he had been with him for many years. “For the world’s most populous region, it is important that I have someone I can completely trust to deliver my agenda and help us make America great again,” Trump said. Sergio will make a wonderful ambassador.

Indian Ambassador to the US Vinay Mohan Kwatra welcomed Gore’s nomination and described him as one of Trump’s most trusted aides. He said that this decision reflects the importance and priority given by the US to its bilateral relations with India. Last month, in the hearing to confirm his name in the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Gore had described India as a strategic partner of America.
He said he was committed to advancing America’s interests in this “important” partnership. Gore had said, “Improving US-India trade relations will not only increase America’s competitiveness, but will also reduce China’s economic influence on other countries.”

Gore, a longtime Trump ally, was nominated in August not only to serve as ambassador to India but also to take on the role of special envoy for South and Central Asian affairs. Describing Gore as “a great friend who has been with me for many years”, Trump said that “For the most populous region in the world, it is important that I have someone I can completely trust to carry out my agenda and help us make America great again. Sergio will be a wonderful ambassador.”
Gore, known for his behind-the-scenes work in Washington, most recently served as Presidential Personnel Director.

During his confirmation hearing in the Senate Foreign Relations Committee last month, Gore had said that India is a strategic partner whose future will shape the region and beyond.
He said he was committed to advancing America’s interest in this “important” partnership. Gore had said, “Improving US-India trade relations will not only increase America’s competitiveness, but will also reduce China’s economic influence on other countries.”
Gore further said that India’s role in ensuring regional stability and security “cannot be underestimated”.“A stable South Asia is in the interests of the United States and all countries,” he told the panel. He further said that the US-India partnership will define the 21st century.
