After the success of Operation Sindoor, India has started talking with Russia to purchase batch in addition to S-400 air defense systems. Top representatives of the Ministry of Defense are scheduled to meet Russian officials to finalize a deal of five S-400 missiles to increase India’s defense capabilities. The agreement between New Delhi and Moscow is likely to be finalized before Russian President Vladimir Putin’s visit to India in December. It is after a deal of $ 5.43 billion signed on October 5, 2018, under which two out of five systems are expected to be distributed by the end of 2026. Additional five systems are being considered to strengthen air protection on India’s 7,000 km long coastline and to remove deficiencies in the Northern Command Region.

Three of the five S-400 missile systems will be purchased directly from Russia, while two units will be manufactured through technology transfer by private companies in India. Both sides have also finalized the price of the deal with an annual increase from the price of 2018. However, sources quoted by the above media outlets suggest that reports of India buying the S-500 system are incorrect. During Operation Sindoor, the S-400 missile defense system played an important role in neutralizing Pakistani air threats, including drones and missile attacks. With its advanced radar and multi-scarful capabilities, it provided long distance aerial defense for major Indian military establishments and cities.

New Delhi and Moscow are currently finalizing the dates of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s visit to India, which is expected to be in early December. The journey will be part of the 23rd India-Russia annual summit, which is an important event of long-term strategic partnership between the two countries. This will be Putin’s first visit to India since the Russia-Ukraine struggle begins.
