The chief constable in the Reasi district of Jammu and Kashmir was arrested on Saturday for taking a bribe by threatening to register a case under the Public Safety Act (PSA). The officers provided this information.
A spokesman for the Anti -Corruption Bureau (ACB) said that the chief constable Mahroof Ahmed posted at Mahore police station was caught red handed demanding and accepting a bribe of eight thousand rupees in the presence of independent witnesses.
In the complaint, the victim (under consideration prisoner) alleged that after being detained in a case, the local court granted him bail on 25 September at the condition that he would attend the Mahore police station between 10 am and 4 pm daily.
The spokesman said that however, during this time Ahmed harassed the complainant, kept him in the police station for more than the scheduled time and demanded a bribe of eight thousand rupees for release. He said that the bribe was given inside the police station on October 1.
According to the spokesperson, two days later, the accused policeman threatened the complainant and his associate again and asked for Rs 12,000 more to get rid of their tractor and release on time.
The spokesman said, “Ahmed threatened that a case under the PSA will be registered against the prisoner for not paying the money. Later this amount was reduced to eight thousand rupees.
The spokesman said that the complainant approached the ACB, refusing the payment. After investigation of the complaint, an FIR was lodged in the respective sections and the accused chief constable was arrested by laying a trap.
