Sonam Wangchuk, while in custody NSA, sought judicial inquiry into deaths in Ladakh violence

Climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, who has been detained under the National Security Act (NSA), has demanded an independent judicial inquiry of four people killed during the protests in Leh, including one ex -serviceman.
These protests took place on 24 September and demanded to restore state status to Ladakh and implement the sixth schedule of the Constitution, but became violent.

Demand for Wangchuk

Wangchuk has appealed to the people of Ladakh to maintain peace and unity and continue their struggle by following the path of non -violence by Mahatma Gandhi. The message came through his brother Tsetan Dorje and Advocate Mustafa Haji, who met him in Jodhpur Central Jail. In his message, Wangchuk has said that he is ready to stay in jail until an independent investigation is ordered.

Ramon Magsaysay Award winner Wangchuk has also supported the ‘Supreme Body’ and ‘Kargil Democratic Alliance’ (KDA) ‘demand to restore the status of state. He said, “Whatever steps will be taken in the interest of Ladakh, I am with him wholeheartedly.”
Wangchuk also said that he is physically and mentally healthy. He has expressed condolences to the families of those killed and prayed for the injured and those arrested.

Both ‘Supreme Body’ and KDA have separated themselves from the Ministry of Home Affairs on 6 October. Their main demands are that there should be a judicial inquiry into the murder of four people and all the detained people, including Wangchuk, should be released unconditionally.
On Monday, Supreme Court Wangchuk’s wife Geetanjali J. Angamo’s petition will hear, in which he has challenged his detention under NSA and demanded his release.
