Emergency turbine deployed in Air India flight, big accident postponed, passengers were safely landed

A big technical alert came out on Saturday in the flight AI117 of Air India from Amritsar to Birmingham. The RAM of the Boeing 787 aircraft was deployed unexpectedly, just before the landing, ie during the final approach. It is a system used for emergency power. However, the operational team safely launched the aircraft in Birmingham.

In a statement, Air India confirmed in a statement, saying, ‘On 4 October 2025, the operating crew of flight AI117 came to know about RAT’s deployment. It is a matter of relief that all electrical and hydrophic parameters were found to be normal in the investigation, and the aircraft made a safe landing in Birmingham.
As a precaution, the aircraft has been stopped for intensive inspection and that is why the return flight of Birmingham-Delhi has been canceled. The airline has made alternative arrangements for passengers.

What is RAM Air Turbine (RAT)?

RAT is an emergency device that is automatically deployed in the event of a double engine or full electronic/hydraulic failure. It produces emergency power to keep the aircraft systems running using wind speed.

Why is this incident important?

The incident occurred when Air India is going through an investigation into its Boeing 787 accident in June this year, in which 260 people died tragically.
