For the first time in Afghanistan, nationwide internet blackout took place when reports came that the Taliban has ordered the closure of fiber-optic services. Local media said that this step is a part of action on the tasks called “immorality” by the Taliban rule. Earlier this month, after an order by Taliban leader Hibbatullah Akhundzada to ban this service, the access of fiber-optic connections in several provinces had already expired. On Monday, the Internet AdvocC Group Netblox confirmed that the connectivity across Afghanistan has “fallen” up to only 14 percent of the normal level, and described it almost completely nationwide telecommunications disruption. The group warned that the incident may be severely limited by the public’s ability to contact the outside world. Tolo News, a private Afghan television channel, reported that sources have confirmed that fiber-optic internet will be discontinued across the country from Monday.

Afghanistan is struggling with this communication blackout, while tension with Pakistan has increased. Pakistan’s Minister of State for Home Talal Chaudhary has given a strong warning to the Taliban over across the border terrorism. Addressing a press conference in Islamabad, Chaudhary said, “If the conversation with the Taliban failed to stop terrorism across the border, Islamabad would respond to the language of bullets.” The minister described terrorism as the biggest challenge for Pakistan and stressed that the ongoing security campaign in the disturbed areas would continue. He alleged that “about 80 percent of the terrorists involved in recent attacks inside Pakistan were Afghan citizens. Chaudhary further said that strict border control measures were being considered to prevent infiltration.

In recent months, terrorist attacks in Pakistan have been seen rapidly, especially in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and tribal districts where soldiers, policemen and citizens have died in constant bombing and ambush attacks. Chaudhary insisted that Pakistan is committed to ending all the dangers for its safety. Those who understand only the language of bullets will be dealt with in the same way.
