Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman visited Karur in Tamil Nadu on Monday and met families affected by the stampede during the rally of TVK chief Vijay on Saturday. 41 people were killed in this rally. He said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Minister of State L.K. Murugan personally called Murugan and asked him to meet the bereaved families and know the condition of the injured. Sitharaman said that many people, men and women were injured in the stampede. We also met the families of some dead. Hearing their stories, my heart came to her mouth. My heart is filled with sorrow. I could not understand what to say.

He told reporters that the incident of Karur is shocked. The injured were rushed to the hospital. The Prime Minister called me and Dr. Murugan and advised us to meet all the families and know the condition of the injured, who have lost their loved ones. Along with Murugan, he inspected the stampede site with the District Collector and met several families of the victims. He said that I could neither talk to them nor console them. Most of them are from poor families. I could hear their pain. He further explained that he conveyed the condolence message of the Prime Minister to the bereaved and the injured.

Sitharaman also highlighted the importance of standard operating procedures for public functions: “There is no time to determine the standard operational procedures for public affairs, especially where there will be a huge crowd of people. Perhaps, we have delayed. We have done too late. Not only in one state, but all over the country, we must have a better way of management of public ceremonies.
