India successfully launched a medium-range fire-prime missile, an advanced medium-distance ballistic missile, from the rail-based mobile launcher system on Thursday. Defense Minister Rajnath Singh said on Thursday that India has successfully tested the fire-prime missile from the rail-based mobile launch system. The next generation missile is designed to hit up to 2,000 kilometers and is equipped with various advanced features.

Singh said in a post on ‘X’ that this is the first launch of its kind from a specially prepared rail-based mobile launch system. He said that it has the ability to run on rail networks, so that users will be able to react to low visibility anywhere in the entire country.

The Defense Minister further stated that the success of the flight testing has included India among the select countries that have developed “Canisterized Launch System” from the moving rail network “. Singh said, “Congratulations to DRDO, Strategic Force Command and Armed Forces for successful testing of medium-distance fire-prime missiles. For this successful flight.”

The post further stated, “Congratulations to DRDO, Strategic Force Command (SFC) and Armed Forces on successful testing of medium-distance fire-prime missiles. This successful flight test has included India in a group of select countries that have the ability to develop cannostarized launch systems from mobile rail networks.”

The test was conducted in August after a successful launch of the missile in Chandipur, Odisha. In March 2024, Agni-5 was tested under the ‘Mission Divyastra’, with MIRV (multiple independent targetable re-entry vehicle) capacity. A missile equipped with MIRV can carry 3-4 nuclear weapons, each of which targets different goals. Currently, the SFC formed in 2003 operates only single-Hathiyar missiles. Solid fuel-powered, three-step Agni-5 is launched with a canister, allowing it to be deployed quickly.
