The producers of the film ‘Haq’, inspired by the Supreme Court’s historic verdict in the Mohammad Ahmed Khan vs Shah Bano Begum case, released the teaser of the film on Tuesday. The film by Yami Gautam and her husband by Yami Gautam and Emraan Hashmi is based on the late 1970s and one of India’s most talked about legal battles in the early 1980s. The teaser reflects the case that continues to discuss justice, personal beliefs and secular laws in Indian society.
‘Haq’ is a fictional and dramatic account based on the events described in Jigna Vora’s book ‘Bano: India’s Beti’. The film takes a look at the Shah Bano case, which sparked a public debate four decades ago and is relevant in today’s context. The case revealed questions such as the same access to justice and the ongoing tension between personal religious laws and comprehensive secular principles. The producers of the film highlight the comprehensive social questions raised from the matter. They ask: “Should the opportunity of justice not be the same for everyone? Where can we pull the line between personal faith and secular laws? And should there be uniform civil code (UCC)?”
