Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address the nation today, Sunday, 5 pm. According to sources, the purpose of his address is not yet clear. However, it is worth noting that this address is taking place a day before the recently announced GST rate cuts are effective.
New rates of GST are being implemented from tomorrow
Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman recently announced major changes in GST (Goods and Services Tax) rates, which have been implemented from 22 September. These changes have been named ‘Next Jane GST Reforms’ or ‘GST 2.0’. Its main objective is to simplify the tax system and make everyday items cheaper for the general public.
Under these changes, four major slabs of GST (5%, 12%, 18%and 28%) have been reduced to two main slabs (5%and 18%). This means that goods with 12% and 28% GST have now been included in the slab of 5% and 18% respectively and a new, 40% slab has been implemented on luxury items to reduce their consumption.
