India voted in favor of the United Nations General Assembly’s proposal on Friday, which allows Palestinian President Mahmood Abbas to address the upcoming high level session through a video conference.
Earlier, the US refused to grant visas to Palestinian officials, so that they would not be able to participate personally in the session. The 193 -member General Assembly of the United Nations passed a resolution titled ‘Palestine Nation Participation’ in its 80th session, which 145 countries voted in favor, while five voted in protest and six countries did not participate in voting.
The US and Israel opposed the proposal, while India was one of the countries supporting it. The proposal expressed regret over the decision to refuse to give visas to American Palestinian representatives and cancel their visas, making them effectively from attending the United Nations meetings. The general debate of the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly will begin on 23 September, in which Palestinian heads of state will address world leaders on 25 September.
