Explained What is Antifa | US President Donald Trump declared antifa movement as ‘terrorist organization’

The United States President Donald Trump announced on Wednesday (local time) that he was going to nominate an antifa, an anti-fascism movement as a “major terrorist organization”. Antifa is a concise form of ‘anti-fascists’ (anti-fascism), which is a broad term for over-leftist militant groups and not an organization. These groups, especially during demonstrations, oppose fascists and neo-Najis. It is not yet clear how the administration will declare a decentralized movement as a terrorist organization and the White House (the official residence and office of the US President) did not give much information about this immediately on Wednesday.

Antifa will be declared a terrorist organization: Trump

Trump, who went on a state visit to Britain, made this announcement on social media on Wednesday night. He called Antifa as ‘sick, dangerous, extremist leftist disaster’ and also recommended the investigation of its funding. Antifa is a domestic group and is therefore not suitable for the Foreign Department to join the list of foreign terrorist organizations. Many groups, including terrorist organizations like Islamic State and Al-Qaeda, are included in this list. But if this group gets the status of terrorist organization, then the Department of Justice can prosecute those who support such groups.

What is antifa?

It is a secret group of radical workers that have emerged in recent years. Its official leaders are not known. Its members, often wearing black clothes, protests against racism, extreme-south values, and what they consider fascism, and say that violent strategy is sometimes justified as self-defense.

The word Antifa emerged prominently during Donald Trump’s first term as the US President of Donald Trump. According to a document available in the Document Collection of the US House of Representatives, the word antenafa is a brief form of anti-fascist.
The document states that antifa “is not highly organized movement, nor is it just an idea. Antifa is a loose organization of local activists spread in the United States and some other countries.” According to the document, there is no official national leadership of the anterph, “Although its followers have been organized in small local groups”.

This is not the first time Trump compared Antifa to a “terrorist organization”. He also suggested a similar suggestion during his first term in 2020, especially in the context of nationwide protests in the US after the murder of George Floid in Minianpolis.

background

Antifa members consider themselves part of a protest tradition that is associated with opposition groups in Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy before World War II. The roots of antif’s activation in the US are associated with anti-racism, which were mobilized in the 1980s protesting the activities of racist skinheads, Ku Clox Clan (KKK) and the activities of new-Nazis.

Antifa Group in America

On August 12, 2017, Antifae groups gained prominence in the United States following violent clashes between white dominations and their opponents, including anterifa supporters, in Charlotsville, Virginia. Over the years, these groups have been becoming increasingly active in protests and rallies, especially in rallies that include over-defyed members. For example, in June 2016, Antifa and other protesters opposed a new-d Nazi rally at Sacramento, California, stabbing at least five people.
In February, March and April 2017, Antifa members attacked right -wing protesters at the University of California, Berkeley with bricks, pipes, hammers and home -made equipment. In July 2019, Swayambhu Antifa, William Van Spronson attempted to bomb the propane tank at the US immigration and customs enforcement prevention center at Tacoma, Washington, but was killed by the police. Since his first term, the Trump has been blaming the antifa for several tasks of his dislikes, from violence against the police to the US capital on 6 January 2021. Former Trump’s FBI Director, Christopher Ray, stated in 2020 testimony that Antifa is an ideology, not an organization in which it is not a hierarchical structure on the basis of which the federal government can declare it a terrorist group.
