Hope of reconciliation after 50% tariff shock! American chief negotiator will reach India tonight

India and the US are expected to have a trade talks on Tuesday. News agency ANI quoted a government official as saying that US chief negotiator Brendon Lynch, who is Trump’s associate and assistant American trade representative for South and Central Asia, will reach India tonight for business talks. This development occurred at a time when there are indications of reduced tension between the two countries after Trump imposed 50 percent tariff on India. The Trump administration has been constantly criticizing India for buying Russian oil and alleging that it is promoting war in Ukraine.

Initially, the Trump administration imposed a 25 percent tariff on India. Later, he increased 25 percent of tariffs, leading to 50 percent of the total tariff. These additional tariffs came into effect from 27 August. However, last week, Trump described Prime Minister Narendra Modi as his ‘good friend’ and said that India and America will continue to negotiate on trade agreement. Trump posted on social media, “I am happy to declare that India and America are continuing talks to overcome trade obstacles … I am eager to talk to my very good friends, Prime Minister Modi in the coming weeks. I am confident that there will be no difficulty in reaching a successful conclusion for both our great countries!”
