The new Vice President of the country will be CP Radhakrishnan. He has defeated his nearest rival B Sudarshan Reddy in the Vice Presidential election. CP Radhakrishnan got 452 votes while B Sudarshan Reddy got 300 votes. Elections were held on the important post of Vice President of India because former Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned citing health reasons. The ruling NDA nominated CP Radhakrishnan as the candidate while the opposition expressed confidence in Sudarshan Reddy.

Rajya Sabha General Secretary PC Modi said that NDA candidate and Maharashtra Governor C.P. Radhakrishnan got 452 votes of first preference. He has been elected Vice President of India. Opposition’s Vice Presidential candidate Justice Sudarshan Reddy got 300 votes of first preference. After the voting ended, official sources said that 12 out of 781 MPs did not vote. A total of 767 votes were cast in the Vice Presidential election, 752 valid and 15 were illegal. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Ministers and MPs from various parties voted on Tuesday for the election of the new Vice President of the country. Members of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha participate in this election. Prime Minister Modi first voted at the commencement of voting. For the 17th Vice Presidential election of the country, the electoral college includes 233 elected members of the Rajya Sabha (currently five seats are vacant), and 12 nominated members and 543 elected members of the Lok Sabha (currently one seat is vacant). The electoral college has a total of 788 members (currently 781). This time both the candidates are from South India. Radhakrishnan is from Tamil Nadu while Reddy is from Telangana.
During the recent monsoon session of Parliament, Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned as the Vice President citing health reasons, although his term was two years left. This election is being held due to his resignation. On the basis of the support given by various parties, in terms of data, the NDA candidate’s upper hand is heavy. However, the opposition candidate Reddy tried to strengthen his claim by repeatedly saying that the fight is ideological and this voting is not just to choose the Vice President, but for the spirit of India.

A day before the election, on Monday, the MPs of the opposition held a meeting with solidarity and participated in the ‘mock’ (symbolic) voting so that they would have one vote valid after voting on Tuesday. Opposition MPs were asked to ensure that their vote should not be wasted, as some votes were declared illegal last time. Meanwhile, the NDA also held a meeting of its MPs to inform the election process on Monday. Members also participated in ‘mock’ voting. A day before the voting, Odisha’s leading opposition party Biju Janata Dal (BJD) decided that its MPs would not vote in the Vice Presidential elections.
