A angry mob in Indonesia’s provincial capital set fire to the local Parliament House, killing at least three people and five others. Makassar, the capital of South Sulawesi province, was set on fire late on Friday night.
On television, reports showed that the provincial council building kept burning overnight. Local disaster officer Fadli Tahar said that rescuers recovered three bodies till Saturday morning, while five people were admitted to the hospital due to burning or breaking bones after jumping from the building.
In Bandung city of Western Java, protesters also set a regional parliament on fire on Friday, but no casualties were reported. In Indonesia’s second largest city Surbaya, protesters attacked the regional police headquarters after destroying fencing and setting fire to vehicles.
In the capital of Indonesia, peace returned to a large extent on Saturday, as the authorities removed the debris from the police offices and bus sites in the grip of burnt cars and protesters.
A five -day protest started in Jakarta on Monday. The demonstration began after reports that all 580 MPs get a monthly housing allowance of five crore rupees (US $ 3,075) in addition to their salary. This allowance, launched last year, is about 10 times more than Jakarta’s minimum wage.
