In Jammu-Kashmir, the situation worsens due to continuous rains, India cautioned Pakistan with the danger of flood

The heavy rains in Jammu and Kashmir for three consecutive days have made the situation serious. Rivers and drains are flowing above the danger mark, which submerged many lower areas of Jammu. Traffic has been stopped on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway. While reviewing the flood control measures, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah today directed the officials to be on high alert and announced the release of additional funds for emergency works. The Chief Minister wrote on the social media forum ‘X’ that the situation in many parts of Jammu is very serious and he himself will go from Srinagar to Jammu and take stock of the situation.

Meanwhile, India has also cautioned Pakistan towards floods. It is reported that the water level in the reservoirs and rivers associated with the Indus river system is continuously increasing and this may also threaten the Indus basin parts of Pakistan. Experts say that Indus Waters Treaty is currently suspended due to political reasons, but India took a step to share information in view of natural disasters and human security. In fact, giving timely information in emergency like floods meets the test of both human approach and international obligations.

Sources in the Ministry of Water Resources of India said that this step has been taken not a part of any diplomatic initiative, but with the aim of saving from potential major human crisis in the neighboring country. The aim is to ensure that the growing water in the Indus river system in Pakistan’s Punjab and Sindh provinces suddenly does not fall into the grip of floods.

If seen, the deteriorating conditions due to rain in Jammu and Kashmir and a serious flood crisis in Jammu have not only alerted the local administration, but India has also had to warn Pakistan across the border. This situation indicates that even though the treaty is politically postponed, the basic principles of human concern and disaster management do not depend on any agreement.
