Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit China to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit in Tianjin next week. This will be his first visit to China in more than seven years. The meeting, hosting President Xi Jinping, expects to show the global South solidarity, Russia, who is struggling with restrictions, to receive another diplomatic platform and outline the growing influence of Beijing.

It is also reported that Xi Jinping will personally welcome Narendra Modi and Vladimir Putin, which will be a powerful performance of global South solidarity between Donald Trump’s tariff. Apart from Prime Minister Modi and Putin, leaders of the Central Asia, Middle East, South Asia and Southeast Asia have been invited to the SCO summit, which will be held in Tianjin on 31 August and 1 September. Recently, Russian officials in New Delhi said that they expect trilateral talks between India, China and Russia.
For India, the SCO Summit is important as New Delhi wants to maintain the softening in relations with Beijing after the 2020 border conflicts. According to news agency Reuters, analysts are expected to take further steps of trust-making, including the return of soldiers, relaxation of business obstacles and new cooperation areas. On Prime Minister Modi’s visit to China, Secretary (West) Tanmay Lal, Secretary of the Ministry of External Affairs, said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit the Chinese Tianjin for the 25th meeting of the Presidents of the Shanghai Cooperation Council (SCO) on 31 August and 1 September on the invitation of Chinese President Xi Jinping.

He said that the SCO was founded with the primary goal of combating three evils of terrorism, separatism and extremism, which still remains a challenge … SCO has 10 members. Apart from India, these include Belarus, China, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Russia, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. The program of the upcoming 25th SCO Summit in Tianjin includes a welcome banquet on the evening of 31 August.
