Taking an important step towards controlling the rapidly growing online gaming industry, the Government of India has approved a tough bill targeting online gaming platforms related to betting and gambling. The Union Cabinet on Tuesday approved the proposed bill, which includes strict penalty, fine and the right to ban such apps if required. One of the major provisions of the Bill is to ban or ban on celebrities and public celebrities supporting or promoting online gaming apps related to betting or gambling. This legislative step has been raised amidst increasing concerns about irregular gaming platforms, especially among young audiences, addiction and financial risks. Experts believe that if this bill is passed, it will fundamentally change the way of operating online gaming companies in India and promote a safe and more responsible gaming environment. Earlier, in June, Google representatives appeared before the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with the money laundering investigation related to illegal online betting and gambling platforms, while Meta officials did not testify. The ED initially summoned the two companies in July, but extended their appearance date. The agency sought documents from the company, with the statements of Google’s Compliance Officer under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).
