United Nations human head Tom Fletcher has described the killings of assistance workers worldwide as an embarrassing indictment of international inaction and apathy. On the occasion of World Humanitarian Day, Fletcher said that the number of human workers killed has increased by 31 percent as compared to the previous year. Due to continuous conflicts in Gaza, where 181 human workers were killed and 60 people lost their lives in Sudan. Fletcher reported that 383 assistance personnel were killed last year, about half of which were killed in Gaza.

Fletcher said that a single attack on any human colleague is on all of us and those whom we serve. On this scale and without any accountability, attacks are an embarrassing indictment of international inaction and apathy. Al Jazeera, citing the United Nations, said that most of the people killed were local employees who were either attacked or in their homes. Fletcher said that as a humanitarian community, we again demand that people with power and influences work for humanity, protect citizens and help workers and hold criminals accountable.

Assistance personnel security database, which has been compiling United Nations reports since 1997, registered 293 murders in 2023. According to Al Jazeera, the provisional statistics of this year suggest that 265 assistance personnel have been killed by 14 August. One of the deadliest incidents of this year took place on March 23 in the city of Rafa, the city of Southern Gaza, when Israeli soldiers opened fire before dawn, killing 15 physicians and emergency reaction personnel traveling in clearly marked vehicles. After this, the Israeli army drove bulldars on bodies and vehicles and buried them in a collective tomb. According to Al Jazira’s report, the United Nations and rescue workers allegedly reached the spot a week later.
