Doctors are migrating from All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) across the country and have resigned 429 doctors from 20 institutes from 2022 to 2024. The data shared by the government in Parliament has been revealed. The government was answering a question asked by doctors about leaving AIIMS to go to private jobs. The data presented in the Rajya Sabha by Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare Prataprao Jadhav shows that the resignations took place between 2022 and 2024.

The reasons for these resignations include both individual and commercial factors. However, the Ministry has not given details of specific reasons or has not done any comprehensive nationwide study on this incident. Statistics have shown that the maximum 52 doctors resigned from AIIMS Delhi, which is the original institution and the most prestigious among all AIIMS. After this, 38 doctors resigned in AIIMS Rishikesh, 35 in AIIMS Raipur, 32 in AIIMS Bilaspur and 30 in AIIMS Mangalgiri. These resignations have come at a time when most AIIMS faculty/doctors are struggling with shortage.
In all 20 AIIMS, including Delhi AIIMS, almost one out of every three faculty is lying vacant. Recently, the government told Parliament in response to another question that a provision has been made to appoint retired faculty members from institutions and government medical colleges of national importance at the level of Professor, Additional Professor and Associate Professor on a contract basis for a period of up to 70 years.
Other notable figures include AIIMS Bhopal (27), and AIIMS Jodhpur (25). The new AIIMS institutes also did not remain untouched by this. AIIMS Kalyani in West Bengal lost 22 faculty members, while Punjab -based AIIMS Bhatinda also lost a similar number of faculty members. Even in many small AIIMS complexes such as Madurai, Vijaypur and Guwahati, although the faculty members migrated on a low scale.

Why AIIMS doctors are resigning
Many reasons account for this. In Rae Bareli, there is a lack of housing for employees, and connectivity is poor due to rural environment. Rae Bareli is considered a Tier-3 city, so house rent allowance (HRA) is less here. Security is also a matter of concern, as the construction of the boundary wall is delayed due to dispute over nine acres of land. Many doctors say that the new AIIMS campus lacks essential facilities like good schools, shopping complexes and reliable internet connectivity.
