Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said that the Maharashtra government is not interested in controlling people’s food options’, amidst the controversy over some municipal bodies in Mumbai on August 15, Independence Day. Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar also expressed displeasure over this, saying that such sanctions are usually imposed on religious occasions like Mahashivaratri and Mahavir Jayanti. Earlier, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar Municipal Corporation had announced the closure of slaughterhouses, shops and meat selling shops within the city on August 15 and 20.

At least four municipal bodies in Maharashtra and one municipal body in Hyderabad have ordered the meat shops on Independence Day on August 15. Kalyan-Dombivali Municipal Corporation (KDMC) has started a political dispute with an order banning the sale of meat on Independence Day. Opposition party NCP (SP) and Shiv Sena (UBT) leaders have called it an attack on people’s food options.

Shiv Sena (UBT) MLA Aditya Thackeray has expressed displeasure over this. He said, in our house, even on Navratri, there is a shrimp and fish in our offerings, because it is our tradition, this is our Hindutva. This is not a matter of religion nor is it a matter of national interest. Thackeray said that the commissioner of Kalyan-Dombivali should be suspended. He said, what should we eat on Independence Day, it is our right and freedom. They cannot tell us whether to eat vegetarian or non -vegetarian. We will definitely eat non -vegetarian. This is the tradition of our home.

NCP (Sharad Pawar) leader Jitendra Awhad reportedly said that he would eat non -vegetarian food on August 15 to protest against the ban. Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar said that if it were on Ashadhi Ekadashi or Mahavir Jayanti, the ban would have been understood. But when there is no such opportunity, why is the meat shops being forced to close? KDMC Deputy Commissioner (License) Kanchan Gaikwad also said that the order has been issued every year since 1988.
