Heavy rain warning in Uttarakhand, police stopped pilgrims in Sonprayag, Kedarnath Yatra stopped for three days

Kedarnath Yatra has been stopped for three days on Wednesday due to warning of heavy rains in Uttarakhand. The pilgrims are being prevented from moving forward by installing barricades at Sonprayag and Jawari police posts. The district administration stopped the yatra from August 12 to August 15 as a precaution to ensure the safety of pilgrims. When about 100-150 pilgrims tried to forcibly break the barricades in Sonprayag, the police intervened and stopped them without any major incident. Rudraprayag Superintendent of Police Akshay Prahlad Konde confirmed that the situation came under control without any problem.

Rudraprayag Superintendent of Police Akshay Prahlad Konde said that about 100-150 pilgrims reached Sonprayag this morning and tried to move forward by arguing with the police in Sonprayag. The police stopped them and did not let them go. There has been no incident with anyone in this case. “When he was adamant on stubbornness despite the instructions, the police had to take action to disperse them,” he said. The incident took place after a video of a clash between Rudraprayag police and pilgrims in Sonprayag went viral.
Rudraprayag SP Akshay Prahlad Konde said, “The video of the clash between police and pilgrims has gone viral. Red alert continues due to continuous rains here. Yesterday a woman died and many others were injured in an unfortunate incident. After this, the district administration stopped the pilgrimage for three days, which is effective till yesterday. The decision to stop the journey has been taken keeping in mind the safety of the pilgrims, as heavy rains can cause landslides and accidents. The officials are keeping a close watch on the situation and will allow pilgrims to move forward if the weather is fixed. He said that the district police is requesting the pilgrims visiting Shri Kedarnath Dham Yatra not to go beyond the district police post in Jawari. For this, the police had also installed barricading in Sonprayag. However, some pilgrims started pushing the police and tried to move forward by breaking the barricade.
