Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday informed a Pune court that he was in danger of life in view of the recent political struggles and the complaint of complainant Satyaki Savarkar in the defamation case against him.

Congress MP Rahul Gandhi has alleged that some BJP MPs have threatened him that he would be the same fate for his remarks against Vinayak Damodar Savarkar during the ‘Bharat Joko Yatra’ in 2022 as his grandmother Indira Gandhi. Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday informed a Pune court that he was in danger of life in view of the recent political struggles and the complaint of complainant Satyaki Savarkar in the defamation case against him.

According to the report of the bar and bench, he urged the Special MP/MLA court hearing a defamation case to take judicial cognizance of the serious apprehensions expressed by him for their safety and fairness of the case. Satyaki Savarkar filed a defamation suit against the Leader of Opposition. Satyaki Savarkar gave a speech in London in March 2023 in which he mentioned an incident in Savarkar’s writing in which Savarkar and others allegedly attacked a Muslim person and found it “pleasant”.

Satyaki Savarkar disputed the existence of such details in Savarkar’s published compositions and argued that these comments were false, misleading and defamatory. He has demanded Gandhi to be convicted under Section 500 of IPC and compensation under Section 357 of CRPC. The court will next hear the case on 10 September.
