First NSA Doval and now Foreign Minister Jaishankar, will visit Russia on 20-21 August

Jaishankar will visit Moscow on 21 August and hold talks with the country’s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavarov. The Russian Foreign Ministry said in a brief statement that the two ministers would discuss major aspects of cooperation within the international structure of our bilateral agenda. Jaishankar’s visit to Russia will take place only a few weeks after National Security Advisor Ajit Doval’s visit to Russia. It is believed that these trips are already decided, but these are happening at a time when India-American relations have declined drastically after 50 percent of American tariffs were imposed on India on the purchase of Russian oil. US President Donald Trump has accused India of funding the Russian war against Ukraine through oil purchasing.

By the end of the year, Russian leader Vladimir Putin is also expected to come to India, which will be his first visit to India since he started a full invasion of Ukraine in 2022, causing diplomatic isolation in the world. Later this month, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will also visit China to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Sangathan (SCO) summit. Putin is also expected to attend this summit. In view of Trump’s Tariff War against the world, it has been suggested that India should work bilaterally or multilaterally with Russia and China on forums such as ‘RIC’ to find options for American export market.

However, the reality has been revealed that RIC will be a China-oriented group and will not be in India’s favor. Finally, even though India and China have partially resolved the deadlock in Ladakh and have taken steps such as the visa and Kailash-Mansarovar pilgrimage to resume, the relationship is still far from normal. For example, China has continuously blocked the supply of rare soil to India. China has also stopped supply of special fertilizers. China has banned the work of its engineers in mobile factories in India to prevent India’s progress to promote domestic manufacturing.

The Indo-China standoff in Ladakh is still away from resolving as the deployment of soldiers and warfare equipment posted on the advance front has partly decreased and widespread tension remains to decrease and patrolling in all areas of dispute has not yet been restored.
