Delhi Mayor Raja Iqbal Singh welcomed the Supreme Court order on Tuesday to directed to remove stray dogs from all areas of Delhi-NCR within eight weeks. He said that the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) will implement this order in a phased manner. Speaking to ANI, Delhi’s Mayor Singh said that we will implement the order of the Supreme Court. MCD has 20 shelter homes running. We will work in a phased manner – in the first stage, we will choose dogs that are likely to bite or are infected with rabies. Later, we will focus on other stray dogs. All this will be done with the help of NGOs. We will soon start a helpline.

Raja Iqbal Singh further said that a meeting is being planned with all agencies in Delhi-NCR to work towards creating a free area from dogs and the sterilization program can be expanded. She further said, “Chief Minister Rekha Gupta never refuses for any project and she thinks about public welfare. Dogs in shelter homes will be considered as pets.”
Earlier, the Supreme Court on Monday took the problem of stray dogs seriously and directed Delhi-NCR officials to remove stray dogs from all areas and keep them in dedicated dog shelters to be established by the municipal bodies. A bench of Justices JB Pardiwala and R Mahadevan said that all areas should be freed from stray dogs and there should be no compromise. The bench also clarified that no captured animal would be released back to the streets.

The bench also ordered contempt action against all individuals or organizations that try to obstruct the officials to catch stray dogs. Justice Pardiwala said, “If a person or organization obstructs stray dogs, we will take action against any such resistance.” The Supreme Court also directed the states and municipal authorities to make a shelter site for dogs, where enough employees are present for sterilization and vaccination of dogs.
