A petition has been filed against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Nishikant Dubey in the Nashik Sessions Court. Dubey recently insulted the Marathi language and community. The petition has been filed by Sudam Kombade, president of the Nashik unit of Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS). In this, Dubey has been demanded to publicly apologize to the people of Maharashtra. Kambade took this step after Dubey did not apologize for his comment, after which there was heavy opposition in the whole of Maharashtra. In the petition, Kombade accused Dubey of hurting the sentiments of the Marathi -speaking people and demanded a public regret. The controversy began after the video surfaced in which Dubey allegedly said in the context of increasing regional tension between the local and migrant population, let us kill us in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar. Although Dubey did not directly name the Marathi community in the clip, the comment was seen as an inflammatory response to the regional claims in Maharashtra, especially under stress before the upcoming municipal corporation elections. Lok Sabha MP Dubey from Godda constituency in Jharkhand has not yet responded to the demand for apologizing.

The legal development has come amid fresh debate over the rights and representation of Marathi speaking people in cities like Urban Maharashtra, especially Mumbai, Thane and Nashik, where a large number of migrant population is from northern states like Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. With the municipal elections approaching, political parties like MNS are re -airing the issue of Marathi pride and accusing national parties of ignoring the linguistic and cultural identity of the local population. Sudam Kombade’s legal move can further increase political tension, especially at a time when regional parties are trying to strengthen Marathi votes before the municipal elections.
