The Supreme Court has ordered former Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel and his son Chaitanya Baghel to move to the Chhattisgarh High Court in connection with the individual relief sought against the investigation and arrest in the money laundering case related to the Chhattisgarh liquor scam. A bench of Justice Suryakant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi requested the High Court to settle the case quickly. In relation to the two challenging the constitutional validity of the PMLA provisions related to the powers of ED investigation, arrest, etc., a bench of the apex court asked the petitioners to file a new petition in the Supreme Court, which will be considered on 6 August.

The government shops allegedly used market practices such as the off-the-book sales of domestic liquor, rigging in FL-10A license for foreign liquor trade, and cartel to whiten the huge earnings of crime.

The ED has named several prominent people including Anwar Dhebar and former bureaucrat Anil Tuteja in the scam. At the same time, former Excise Minister Kavasi Lakhma has also been accused, who allegedly received bribes regularly. So far, assets worth Rs 205 crore have been seized in this case. The Congress party strongly condemned the arrest and called it “open action of political vengeance”. Party leaders claim that the BJP -led central government is misusing the investigating agencies to target opposition leaders and influence the upcoming election results in Chhattisgarh.
